    Research shows that conscientious African Americans…search for ways to spend their holiday dollars more conscientiously.

    In an article published by “Black Enterprise” dated December of 1999, a study conducted by Atlanta-based Ketchum Public Relations African American Markets Group, showed that nearly 85% of African Americans said they prefer to purchase products from companies that have historically supported the black community.

    In fact, about two-thirds reported that they investigate a company’s minority hiring practices or any negative press it may have received relating to racial issues.

    African-Americans Forced to Spend 2/3 of Their Retail Dollars Outside of Their Neighborhoods

    Residents of black communities spend an estimated 64 percent of their
    consumer dollars, more than $5.3 billion a year, outside of their
    neighborhoods.

    
    Among neighborhoods with median household earnings between $40,000 and
    $50,000 per capita, white areas have 47 percent more major retailers than
    black areas.

    
    White neighborhoods have nearly eight times more apparel retailers than
    black neighborhoods.

    
    There are three times more major retailers in communities with a median
    income greater than $50,000 per capita than those where the median is less
    than $30,000.

    African American Economics and the Colorblind Society

    I am often perplexed by the arguments about the economic well being of us as African Americans. Some of us tend to believe that we must rely upon the status quo to solve our economic problems, with our involvement regulated to a quasi arrangement of positions ranging from government assistance; to watchful waiting; to hopeful expectations.

    The argument that I find to be the most divisive [and I might add the most ridiculous] are the arguments which appear to be rooted in the conception that for us to do something for ourselves, by ourselves, and dependent upon ourselves, is in some way associated with an act of racial bias on our part.

    It has been my personal experience and observation, that lurking behind these opinions is the belief that for us to formulate any self reliant actions which exclude either the approval, or unregulated participation of other ethnic groups, is(…)
